The first time I ever made french toast on my own was while living in Norway. I remember having watched my mother make french toast for the family, but I couldn’t remember how long she would let the toast soak in the egg and milk bath. So, like a novice, I let the toast sit in the bath for somewhere around 15-20 seconds before slapping it onto the griddle. Needless to say, the bread was pretty soggy, even after it had been fried.
I have since learned my lesson, and particularly because for the first three years of my marriage, when asking my husband what he’d like for breakfast, he would respond, “french toast.” Even now, that is still one of his top choices for breakfast. And making it with the Homemade Hawaiian Sweet Bread is delicious! In fact it’s our favorite way to make it.
Over the years I’ve made little changes to the egg and milk bath, because, in reality the egg and milk bath is what it’s all about right? Okay, that and the bread, but being a somewhat experimental cook (as my husband would say), and delighting in sweet things, I’ve always added ingredients to the bath to make it a little more sweet and flavorful compared to the basic eggs and milk. The first few times I made french toast for my husband I was just guessing at the ingredients-lucky for me, and him, it turned out!
For this recipe we also use our Homemade Hawaiian Sweet bread, for the toast which makes it soft and delicious! This has definitely become a favorite among the family, and I hope you enjoy it too!
- 3 eggs
- 3/4-1 cup milk (or milk substitute)
- 2 1/2 Tbs sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- dash of salt
- 8 slices of bread
- Heat griddle to approximately 400 degrees.
- In medium sized bowl mix eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt. (You can beat it or stir with a whisk).
- Once griddle is hot, dip bread, one at a time into the egg bath, coating both sides quickly. (Don't let the bread sit in the egg bath too long-you don't want it soggy!), then place coated bread on the griddle.
- Flip bread once it looks golden brown to the other side. The bread is done once both sides look golden brown.
- Repeat for all 8 slices of bread.
- Serve warm with butter, syrup, powdered sugar, or jam.
- This recipe works great with any bread, but to use the Homemade Hawaiian Sweet Bread recipe like in the pictures, visit our Homemade Hawaiian Sweet Bread recipe under Recipes and then Breads.
Sandra
Just discovered your blog. I like how your recipes are just plain good using ingredients that are “normal” and not expensive. Good cooking! Thx.
