If you have never tried homemade flour tortillas, now is the time. They are soft and delicious and so much better than store bought tortillas! You also know everything that is going into the recipe so there’s no mysterious ingredients to worry about.
We make homemade tortillas all the time for tacos, burritos, quesadillas, you name it! They are so easy to make that I almost never buy store bought tortillas anymore. In fact, the last time I did was four years ago. I know because we recently found some from 2011 in our deep freezer.
There are a variety of tortilla recipes out there, but almost all of them use similar ingredients. This is a great tortilla recipe that I found on momontimeout.com. I’ve altered a few things to make it a bit more healthy. Enjoy!
- 2 cups all-purpose flour (I generally use 1 cup of white flour and 1 cup of whole wheat or sprouted wheat flour)
- 3/4 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 3 Tbs Tallow (or Olive Oil, Lard, or Palm Oil)
- 3/4 cup water
- Extra Olive Oil or tallow for frying (optional)*
- Mix all ingredients except water together with a fork. Mix until crumbly.
- Add water and mix.
- Place dough on a floured surface and knead for a couple minutes until dough is smooth.
- Divide dough into quarters and then each quarter into thirds to make 12 portions.
- Roll out each portion into a circle.
- Cook the tortillas in a skillet over medium heat in 1 tsp of Olive Oil or tallow) until lightly browned on both sides.
- Remove to a plate and cover with a towel to keep warm. (I have found they stay the softest if you cover them with 2-3 towels on the top and the bottom. So use 4-6 towels total).
- Serve immediately.
- To make larger tortillas (like for burritos) divide into 6 portions instead of 12.
- *The tortillas in the photos were fried in olive oil. You do not need to add oil to the pan each time you fry them though. They will cook just fine in a warm pan.
